HS200 (HEALTHY LIFESTYLES)

The Experience

I took HS200 (Healthy Lifestyles) in fall of 2018. I really enjoyed this class as it served as a foundation for change in my on personal life. The central focus of this class was to gain a better understanding of our own personal health and how engaging in healthy behaviors can make a difference. What stood out to me for this class as it pertains to sustaining well being was the behavior change project. It was geared towards engaging in behaviors that would lead to healthier life. For me, I wanted to change my exercise and eating habits as well as my anxiety levels. This assignment, which entailed me modifying those behaviors a best as I could helped modify those current lifestyle choices and made me a happier person. One of the important things that this project made me realize was the importance of support in the process of trying to change a behavior. I noticed that for myself, behaviors can be reactionary and without thought. Having another person to help you see things more clearly for accountability is important. This can even be connected to how rely on others for help in an organizational setting. Another important aspect that I realized through this course is the importance of the S.M.A.R.T goal format. Specific, measurable, actionable, relevant, and time are all necessary for a person to achieve their desired goal. Discussion posts were also great for promoting new ways to stay healthy and that it can actually be viewed as enjoyable, rather than a burden. It also showed me the importance of perspective when it comes to personal change. This course equipped me with not only with academic knowledge, but with experiential knowledge I needed to sustain a life of healthy living.
